Big Fishin’

The new thing I did this week… is perform Big Fish.

Big Fish is the musical I have been working on this past school year. It has been many many months of rehearsals, singing, dancing, and lots of fun.

Before I started working on this musical with The Lights Up Theater company in Santa Barbara, I had never heard of this musical before. If I were to briefly describe the show I would say that it is about an adventurous and creative man who embellishes his life story to the people in his live. He chooses his story to make it the way he wants, then tells that.

This musical was the biggest show I have ever done. In the dress rehearsals the run through was around 3 hours, but for the show we managed to get it to 2 hours and 20 mins. This show has so many set pieces, and over a hundred costumes. I had at least 8 costumes.

The music in this show is contagious. Once you hear those songs they are really in your head for a while. Many people walked out of that theater humming.

The show, though it has some saddening events and scenes, is electrifying and magical. No one is boring or the same. There is topics that are very real, and some we wish were real. There are giants, witches, fish, elephants, daffodils, towns, first loves, and many more.

I know that I am biased to all of this since I truly love this show and was one of the performers, but I do know that people really liked it, and I was always watching the scenes and dance numbers when I could.

There were four shows and I played the role of Sandra. She is. Strong willed loving red head (yes I had to wear a wig) that doesn’t mind her husbands (Edward’s) embellishments. His dreams are her dreams and they both work to make them come true.

Now that the show is over, I am a bit sad, as I am after most shows. The cast was amazing. Full of so many talented and kind people.

We did the show at a theater at the local Junior High School. After the last show we actually all went out to get ice cream. They were late nights, but so worth it.

Have you ever heard of Big Fish or been in a musical?
